Assisted living is ideally suited for older adults who value their independence but would benefit from some routine assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) or other tasks. Assisted living provides the appropriate level of support for a wide range of needs.
Assisted living makes life more comfortable and convenient through:
- Assistance with ADLs: Team members can help with personal care, like bathing and dressing, and other daily tasks that present challenges.
- Medical care: Depending on a resident’s health needs, they may receive some skilled nursing care and physical, speech, or occupational therapy.
- Medication management: Team members can organize prescriptions and ensure residents correctly follow medication regimens.
- Prepared meals: Restaurant-style dining on site makes it easy to enjoy delicious, nutritious meals without needing to cook.
- Housekeeping and home maintenance: Assisted living offers a maintenance-free lifestyle and help with housekeeping and laundry.
- Emergency response: In the event of a fall or other emergency, team members are always standing by.
- Transportation: Assisted living residents can take advantage of transportation services to doctor’s appointments, errands, and group outings.
Assisted living is designed to meet a wide range of needs. The appropriate level of care will offer the ideal balance of independence and support.
Communities classify levels of care differently, according to their individual pricing structures. Some senior living organizations divide care into five or more tiers, making entry-level pricing applicable only to a minority of residents. These tiers may also be rigidly defined, with one "level three" care need, for example, necessitating level three pricing, even if most of the resident’s needs align more with level two.
Except for our Edgewater community, which employs an all-inclusive pricing structure, WesleyLife assisted living communities classify care according to three levels and use a flexible point system that adds up a resident’s needs to determine the appropriate level rather than imposing rigidly defined tiers. This system allows for a higher level of personalization and cost optimization.
Long-term care provides more extensive care than assisted living. If you’re not sure what level of living would best fit your needs, take this quick assessment and receive a personalized recommendation: Is it the right time for senior living? Or, request a community tour to learn more.
Assisted living exists within a broader continuum of care. Each level of living is designed to meet different needs, with independent living offering a maintenance-free lifestyle and long-term care and memory care offering more assistance and oversight than assisted living.
By moving to a community that offers a full continuum of care on the same campus, you can enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that if your needs change in the future, you can seamlessly transition to a different level of living while remaining within the same community you know and love.
Assisted living homes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from studios to two-bedroom apartments. Consider scheduling a tour for any community you’re considering to explore available options.

According to Genworth, assisted living costs an average of $5,900 per month. The actual cost will depend on various factors, including the level of care provided. Monthly costs are also influenced by the pricing structure chosen; an entry-fee model includes a substantial upfront cost and lower monthly costs, whereas a fixed-lease model minimizes upfront costs through higher monthly fees.
If you would benefit from care, community living typically offers a more cost-effective option than a comparable level of at-home care.
Keep in mind that the cost of assisted living replaces many costs you’re likely used to budgeting for now, including:
- Rent or mortgage
- Homeowner’s insurance
- Property taxes
- Home maintenance expenses
- Utilities
- Meals
- Gym membership or other amenities

Insurance may help with the cost of assisted living. Health insurance, including Medicare, generally does not cover assisted living costs associated with room and board. However, Medicare and private health insurance policies may cover costs associated with care that your health care provider deems necessary.
If you have long-term care insurance, it may cover part or all of the cost of assisted living, depending on your needs and the terms of your policy.
Now may be a great time to move to assisted living if you find yourself struggling with activities of daily living, medication management, or household tasks. Many people who move to assisted living wish they had done so sooner when they discover the ways it can make life safer and more enjoyable while preserving their independence.
