WesleyLife Meals on Wheels
More than Just Meals
Every day, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels directly supports the health and independence of nearly 1,000 adults in the Des Moines Metro through delivery of nutritious meals to their front doors. We deliver nearly 230,000 meals every year!
Here are a few things you should know about us:
- Our menu offers a wide variety of heart-healthy, low-sodium options.
- Our dedicated team of drivers and volunteers delivers meals between 10:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, with frozen meals also available for clients to enjoy whenever they please.
- Our drivers deliver so much more than a meal! They're trained to offer each client a warm "hello!" while checking on his or her safety. Because a driver may be the only person a client sees during the day, he or she can be a vital lifeline in the event of a medical emergency.
Watch Meals on Wheels in Action!
Meals are prepared in our own kitchen and personally delivered by drivers and volunteers Monday through Friday on 22 routes throughout the Des Moines Metro and surrounding communities.
Specially trained drivers and volunteers
Our courteous, friendly drivers and volunteers deliver a warm "hello" with each meal as they check on the safety of their clients. With few exceptions, each client sees the same driver each day, allowing a connection to be established.
Eligibility for Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels focuses on caring for individuals who have difficulty shopping for food and/or preparing meals. The program serves people of all ages, and limited funding is available to adults 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities. (If you'd like to learn more about our services, please don't assume you won't qualify! Contact us and we'll let you know.)
Meals are available at an already low cost of $7.00, and that cost may be further reduced or eliminated due to a client's financial situation. If a client is eligible, funding assistance is available through partners such as Polk County, Aging Resources of Central Iowa, and other State of Iowa-funded programs and initiatives, and through the generous support of the United Way of Central Iowa and private contributions.
First Steps Meal Program
If you're recovering from an illness or surgery and would like meals delivered on a short-term basis, our First Steps Meal Program may be just what the doctor ordered. If you're 60 or older, you can receive -- regardless of your income level -- 5 free, home-delivered meals to help you recover. No strings attached; just call us! If you like the meals, you can sign up to continue receiving them. If you don't, we'll be grateful to have had the opportunity to serve you!

How to make an impact
The public-private partnership supporting the Meals on Wheels movement is one of the most effective models in America. It helps enable older adults to remain independent in their own homes and avoid more costly healthcare alternatives.
About 85 percent of meals served by WesleyLife Meals on Wheels are provided at low or no cost, a percentage that would not be possible without generous donations from individuals and organizations. If you're able, please consider donating the price of a dinner ($7.00) or a week's worth of meals ($49.00). Every donation makes a difference!
If you would like to make a more substantial gift, or if you represent a business that would like to directly impact the lives of people in your community, please donate using the button below or contact one of our philanthropy representatives for assistance. Similarly, if you'd like to volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels, please contact Sarah Underwood, WesleyLife Volunteer Coordinator.
