Getting to Know Hearthstone
In 2010, Pella Regional Health Center gifted WesleyLife three of its senior living buildings, Jefferson Place, Pella Manor and Fair Haven East. Part of the agreement was to build a new assisted living and skilled nursing community to replace services that had been offered through the hospital. That community was named The Cottages.
Construction of The Cottages began in the spring of 2013 featuring six different cottage settings for about 100 seniors. In December 2013, volunteers began moving in assisted living residents and the rest of the facility opened in January 2014.
The Cottages cost nearly $20 million to develop, with roughly $5 million coming from community contributions. Bob and Lois Vermeer, co-chairs of the fundraising campaign for The Cottages, along with Mark and Kay De Cook, Bruce and Sandy Heerema and Stan and Gayle Poortinga, combined donated $550,000 to the campaign. Hearthstone/WesleyLife committed $15 million and secured financing through local banks.
Today, Hearthstone is Pella's most complete network of living options and services for older adults, with a focus on health and well-being for a longer, enjoyable life.
The Cottages, an Innovative and Award-winning Community
The Cottages was recognized by Environments for Aging with a 2015 Design Showcase Award of Merit and the 2015 IIDA Northland Chapter FAB Award in healthcare.
This innovative community –– the first of its kind in Iowa –– aims to transform the aging experience by focusing on abilities while encouraging residents to live life to the fullest. The Cottages provide a place to call home with an emphasis on healthy living, independence and dignity. The role of team members is blended more than in traditional settings, encouraging development of deeper relationships with residents.
The open layout and natural light of The Cottages helps strengthen mind, body and spirit for all residents. At the center of the facility is a common area with gathering spaces that can be reserved for parties or special events. The entrance also houses the Hilltop Cafe, serving residents, their families and the community.
Down the hall is a sun-filled atrium with plants, including tulips, maintained by the local garden club.
Branching off the main entryway, the six small households feature their own decor and color scheme. Even the exterior and rooflines of each cottage are unique.
Artwork lining the walls has been donated by local residents and highlight Pella’s Dutch heritage. Each cottage is also named after provinces in the Netherlands. They include Zuid Holland, Groningen and Gelderland — household living; Zeeland — assisted living memory support; Noord Holland — household living memory support; and Friesland — assisted living.
Individual cottages have open floor plans, with a family-style dining area and kitchen where residents can watch and smell meals being prepared by a homemaker. As part of the PersonFirst holistic model of care, residents wake up and eat when they want and choose their own food, clothing and activities.
The small households also have their own fireplace, living room, family room/library and sun rooms. Memory support cottages also have access to a secured patio.
In September 2015, The Cottages achieved The Alzheimer's Foundation of America's “Excellence in Care® Dementia Program of Distinction” status for its specialized memory care program. WesleyLife was the first senior living organization in Iowa to achieve this prestigious status.
Excellence in Care is the first national program involving comprehensive standards, onsite evaluation and consultation to promote continual performance improvement for dementia care settings, such as assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, adult day centers and adult day healthcare programs, and continuum of care residential communities.
