Program is More Than Just Meals, More Than Just Wheels

WesleyLife Meals on Wheels recently transformed the way it delivers meals to more than 900 clients daily by transitioning to a fleet of 22 MINI. Thanks to a new partnership with UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and Willis Auto Campus, the fleet went into service on Monday, Nov. 3 with a goal these attention-grabbing vehicles will increase awareness of this life-enhancing program so more older persons will benefit from better nutrition and a daily check-in.

Not Just Meals

Every day, WesleyLife Meals on Wheels directly supports the health, vitality and independence of more than 900 adults daily throughout Greater Des Moines through delivery of a nutritious meal to their front doors, with close to 230,000 meals delivered each year. Drivers deliver so much more than a meal–drivers are trained to deliver warm hellos while checking on the safety of their clients. Because a driver may be the only person a client sees during the day, it is not uncommon for drivers to find a client in need of immediate help due to a fall or medical emergency.

“Our goal of transitioning to the MINI Fleet is to expand awareness of Meals on Wheels and keep even more people healthy,” says Adam Lathrop, WesleyLife Director of Senior Nutrition.

WesleyLife Meals on Wheels strives to provide nutritional assistance to those with a need, regardless of ability to pay.  The meals are available at $6.50 per meal to anyone age 60 or older, but the cost may be reduced or free depending on financial circumstances.

Not Just Wheels

The new fleet was created through a partnership between two nonprofit health and wellness organizations, UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and WesleyLife.  Willis Auto Campus is supporting the project with low-cost leases and complimentary wraps allowing the MINI to carry the Meals on Wheels message wherever they go.

How To Make An Impact

During 2013, about 85 percent of WesleyLife Meals on Wheels were provided at low or no cost. If you’d like to support the well-being of adults in greater Des Moines, donations are accepted online at

"My family and I are very much in debt to your organization for your quick response when my dad fell.  When you weren't able to reach him, you didn't hesitate to take action to call me and let me know that all was not as it should be. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the Meals on Wheels program is responsible for saving his life." –Carla, Meals on Wheels family member.
