Resident's story supports data: Life grows richer as we age!

WesleyLife's vision is to become the most dynamic and inclusive champion to revolutionize the experience of aging — and that transformation starts by shifting how we think and feel about growing older.

Contrary to popular belief, evidence shows that most people grow happier as they age. A major U.S. survey, the “Second Half of Life Study” conducted by AARP in partnership with National Geographic, found that older Americans not only report higher life satisfaction than those in their 40s and 50s, but also feel healthier and more financially secure.

Another longitudinal study spanning 20 years with participants ranging in age from age 22 to 95 revealed that older adults experienced the highest levels of well-being — feeling more calm, cheerful, and less stressed than younger age groups.

This U‑shaped curve of life satisfaction, with a dip in midlife and a rise in later years, appears across cultures and generations. For many, happiness seems to peak in the 60s, 70s, or 80s.

What drives this increase in happiness? A research compilation attributes the hypothesis to:

  1. Emotional Wisdom & Perspective
As people age, they tend to focus more on the present, worry less about the future, and savor moments with loved ones .

  2. Letting Go of Unnecessary Pressures
Life in our 60s and beyond often brings freedom from long-held ambitions and the stress of proving ourselves.

  3. Stronger, Deeper Relationships
Older adults frequently report richer social connections and more meaningful interactions.

  4. Reduced Stress & More Free Time
Retirement — although happening later than in past decades — and fewer caregiving demands can allow for a slower pace, more enjoyment, and less stress.

Inspiring Example: Meet Pat Stohlmann

Pat (pictured above), a resident at Hearthstone — a WesleyLife community for healthy living in Pella, Iowa — shares in this video why her 60s became a highlight of her life. Her story reflects the data as well as the deeper truth that our later years can be the most fulfilling chapter yet. Let Pat’s experience guide you in rethinking your own aging experience!
