History of Halcyon House

Dedicated to innovation, Halcyon House has been a leader in transforming the aging experience. Through the years, Halcyon House has continued to bring the most relevant amenities and lifestyle choices to Washington County residents.

Halcyon House History Timeline

1955     First two story building constructed.

1959     Expansion: Single story wing added to current two story building.

1960    Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa, joins Wesley Retirement Services. It includes a nursing wing  and 20 independent apartments.

The First in Iowa: The construction was financed by the first FHA loan made in Iowa.

1973     Expansion: Halcyon 1 Apartment building was completed with 25 Independent Living apartments.

1976     Expansion: Halcyon adds second apartment building and health center addition.

1977     Expansion: Health Center expansion completed.

1979     Expansion: Apartment building 3 completed for an independent living total of 84 apartment homes. Morrison Center is completed for common area meeting space; Named for local attorney Edmund Dunham Morrison and his wife, Kathleen Morrison.

1983     Renovation: Major renovation included a new kitchen area, expanded dining and living room, library and administrative offices.

1985     Renovation: Health Center was enlarged and refurbished.

1991     Expansion: Duplex home construction completed.

1992     Expansion: Second duplex home construction completed.

1996     Expansion: Sitler Center for Helpful Living opens, adding 9 assisted living apartments; dedicated to Bill and Hazel Sitler for their generosity and goodness.

1996     Day Lounge dedicated to founding members of Halcyon, Robert and Cornelia Day.

1999     Timmins Dining Room was named for Harold and M. Jean Timmins for their generous contribution.

2000     Expansion: Duplex home purchased adjacent to Halcyon property.

2007     Expansion: Arbor House assisted living memory support is completed.

The First in Iowa: WesleyLife offers the first state-of-the-art assisted living memory support house in Iowa, offering a true residential care model dedicated to memory support. Arbor House boasts 16 private bedroom suites.

2007     Expansion & Renovation: Renovation and addition of a complete wellness center, Marshall Game Room, Epworth Chapel and the Applewood Bistro.

2008     Renovation: Coffee shop and internet cafe renovated adjacent to Diana's Place, the Halcyon library, for a warm,  friendly gathering space for residents, friends and family alike.

2015      In June, Halcyon House broke ground on a project to replace the health center with four households that will provide long-term health care, short-term rehabilitation, and memory support households.
