Meals on Wheels

A hot meal should be a blessing not a question of affordability!

 

We manage one of the state's largest Meals on Wheels operations - touching more than 10,000 lives per year - and are the sole Meals on Wheels provider in centeral Iowa. Most of these individuals would not eat if it were not for our low cost and often free food deliveries.

A few quick facts about the lives we touch:

• Each weekday, over 1,000 elderly, disabled or homebound people in Greater Des Moines rely on Wesley Meals on Wheels for nutrition and social interaction.

• Amazingly, our drivers, who hand-deliver the meals, are frequently the only human contact for these people have.

• The Meals on Wheels service is provided using a sliding scale fee to assure that anyone who truly needs a meal gets a meal, regardless of their ability to pay.

• Meals on Wheels programs across the country are closing at an alarming rate due to the strain of the current economy. We're taking a different approach - and increasing our impact. In January 2010 alone, the number of meals delivered more than tripled from 5,927 to 19,053.

One highlight each fall is a community-wide dinner, auction and fundraiser which is attended by many Des Moines -area corporate, community and civic leaders and concerned community members.
